Best Moustache Wax for Grey and White Hair
Grey, gray, white, silver and salt-and-pepper facial hair can be magnificent. It can also show up the wrong wax rather mercilessly. A darker moustache wax that looks perfectly sensible on brown or black hair can look too heavy, too yellow, or simply too obvious on lighter whiskers.
Buffer is a moustache and beard wax for grey, gray, white, silver and salt-and-pepper facial hair. It is made as the paler companion to Bounder, giving control without darkening lighter facial hair more than necessary.
Quick answer
For grey or white moustaches and beards, choose a paler wax designed to give control without making light facial hair look darker than intended. Buffer Moustache & Beard Wax is made for lighter facial hair that needs shape, order and civilised restraint.
Why grey and white hair needs a different wax
Traditional moustache waxes can be too dark or too visible on pale facial hair. On grey, gray, white or silver whiskers, even a small colour cast can make the moustache look heavier than intended. The problem is not the moustache. Naturally, the moustache is blameless. The problem is usually choosing a wax made for darker hair.
Buffer is designed as a paler alternative for gentlemen whose facial hair has earned its seniority. It helps add shape and control while keeping the overall look more natural on lighter whiskers.
Natural-looking control
The aim is not to paint the moustache into submission. The aim is to give grey and white facial hair enough hold to behave, while still looking like your moustache rather than somebody else's idea of one.
Use a small amount at first, warm it between finger and thumb, then work it through the moustache or beard and shape as required. A little restraint at this stage avoids the dreaded “over-varnished Victorian uncle” effect.
Moustache wax or mustache wax?
Whether you call it moustache wax or mustache wax, Buffer is made in England for lighter-toned and mature facial hair. It works for grey, gray, white, silver and salt-and-pepper moustaches and beards that need tidy control.
Buffer or Bounder?
- Choose Buffer for grey, gray, white, silver or salt-and-pepper moustaches and beards.
- Choose Bounder Extra-Firm Moustache Wax for the original Wax Industries extra-firm moustache wax, especially where colour is not a concern.
- Choose a triple pack if you use wax daily or prefer not to discover an empty tin at the worst possible moment.
Can Buffer be used on beards?
Yes. Buffer can be used on moustaches and beards where extra control is needed, particularly on grey, gray, white or light-coloured facial hair. Use it sparingly on the areas that need order, rather than attempting to lacquer the whole beard into public office.
How to use Buffer
Use a small amount at first. Warm it between finger and thumb, work it through the moustache or beard, then shape as required. Add a little more only where extra control is needed. For a fuller guide, see How to Apply Moustache Wax.
Frequently asked questions
Will Buffer make grey or white hair look darker?
Buffer is made as a paler wax for grey, white, silver and salt-and-pepper facial hair. Any wax can be visible if over-applied, so start with a small amount and build only where needed.
Is Buffer suitable for a white moustache?
Yes. Buffer is especially useful for white and very light moustaches where a darker wax may stand out too much.
Can I use Bounder on grey hair?
You can, especially if colour is not a concern or your facial hair is darker salt-and-pepper. For paler grey, white or silver hair, Buffer is usually the more natural-looking choice.

FAQs
A little goes a long, long way — Bounder is small but mighty! Other waxes are generally a basic blend of beeswax and petroleum jelly, or another oil, which have to be rubbed to be soft enough to apply and then harden as they cool.
Bounder is different. Its non-greasy formula works by drying, not cooling. So, to prevent it going hard in a big, half-used container, we offer a triple-pack of our standard tin. Always fresh and always convenient to carry in pocket or bag or purse.
When you first open a tin of Bounder it will be smooth, creamy and easy to apply.
A quick scoop with the back of a thumbnail and it is ready to tame your ‘tache.
However, if you have found a long-forgotten tin and the contents have dried out, do not fear!
Your Bounder can be easily revived and put back to work on your whiskers.
• Bounder can be revived by simply warming and stirring in a drop or two of rum or any other spirits.
• Warm it by putting a bit of paper in a frying pan (to catch any spills), place the tin on top (with lid removed) and very gently heat it on the lowest setting.
• When it is not quite liquid, stir in just a couple of drops of rum (or any other spirit - even just water, in an emergency)
• And “drops” means just that - do not add more than one or two; you can repeat the process if required.
• Turn off the heat and and let everything cool with the lid placed, unscrewed, on top of the tin. Be patient - do not test until it is at room temperature.
• Do not try and seal it whilst liquid as there is a high chance of spilling it (molten Bounder gets everywhere, instantly) and, even if successful, the vacuum created as it cools will make getting back into the tin with anything less than a pneumatic drill practically impossible.
We sell direct to keep prices a low as possible but if you have a store or outlet you’d like to see stocking Bounder then please ask them to get in touch with us. We have supplied businesses around the world.
