How to Apply Moustache Wax

A good moustache wax should help the moustache hold its shape without making the whole business feel greasy, heavy or overdone. Bounder Extra-Firm Moustache Wax is made for strong control, sharp tips and unruly whiskers that need civilising.

In the United States, the same search is often written as how to apply mustache wax. The method is the same either way: warm a little wax, work it through the hair, then shape the moustache before it has time to form a committee.

Quick answer

Warm a small amount of wax between finger and thumb, work it into a dry or mostly dry moustache, then shape with your fingers or a comb. Start with less than you think you need. You can always add a little more; removing enthusiasm is harder.

Step by step

  1. Start with a dry or mostly dry moustache. Wax usually grips better when the hair is not soaking wet.
  2. Take a small amount. Scrape or lift a little wax from the tin with a fingertip or thumbnail. Begin modestly.
  3. Warm the wax. Rub it between finger and thumb until it softens enough to spread evenly. A cold lump of wax is not a styling product; it is an argument.
  4. Work it through the moustache. Begin near the middle and move outwards towards the tips, coating the hairs rather than plastering them down.
  5. Shape the moustache. Use fingers for a natural shape, or a comb for a neater, more disciplined finish.
  6. Add more only if needed. Larger moustaches, handlebar styles and sharp tips may need a second small application.
  7. Let it settle. Once shaped, give the moustache a moment to firm up before poking at it again.

For handlebar moustaches

For a handlebar moustache, apply a small amount through the main body of the moustache first, then add a little extra to the tips. Twist and shape each side evenly. Bounder is designed for extra-firm hold, so a modest amount can go a long way.

How much moustache wax should I use?

Begin with a very small amount. A 10g tin lasts longer than many people expect because moustache wax is used sparingly. If the moustache looks overloaded, greasy or stiff in the wrong places, you have probably been a shade too enthusiastic.

Common mistakes

  • Using too much wax. Start small. Add more only where the moustache asks for it.
  • Applying it too cold. Warm the wax properly between finger and thumb before working it through.
  • Applying it to wet hair. Damp is manageable; soaking wet is asking for disobedience.
  • Only waxing the tips. For stronger styles, work a little wax through the body of the moustache as well as the ends.

How do I remove moustache wax?

Warm water and a little soap are usually enough. Work the moustache gently until the wax softens and washes away. There is no need to scrub the poor thing as though it has offended you.

Which wax should I use?

Choose Bounder Extra-Firm Moustache Wax for strong hold, handlebar moustaches and everyday control. Choose Buffer Moustache & Beard Wax if your moustache or beard is grey, gray, white, silver or salt-and-pepper and you want a paler wax for lighter-toned or mature facial hair.

For daily use, the Bounder Triple Pack and Buffer Triple Pack are the sensible choice, because discovering an empty tin at the wrong moment is no way for a gentleman to begin the day.

FAQs

A little goes a long, long way — Bounder is small but mighty! Other waxes are generally a basic blend of beeswax and petroleum jelly, or another oil, which have to be rubbed to be soft enough to apply and then harden as they cool.

Bounder is different. Its non-greasy formula works by drying, not cooling. So, to prevent it going hard in a big, half-used container, we offer a triple-pack of our standard tin. Always fresh and always convenient to carry in pocket or bag or purse.

When you first open a tin of Bounder it will be smooth, creamy and easy to apply.
A quick scoop with the back of a thumbnail and it is ready to tame your ‘tache.

However, if you have found a long-forgotten tin and the contents have dried out, do not fear!
Your Bounder can be easily revived and put back to work on your whiskers.

• Bounder can be revived by simply warming and stirring in a drop or two of rum or any other spirits.

 • Warm it by putting a bit of paper in a frying pan (to catch any spills), place the tin on top (with lid removed) and very gently heat it on the lowest setting.

• When it is not quite liquid, stir in just a couple of drops of rum (or any other spirit - even just water, in an emergency)

• And “drops” means just that - do not add more than one or two; you can repeat the process if required.

• Turn off the heat and and let everything cool with the lid placed, unscrewed, on top of the tin. Be patient - do not test until it is at room temperature.

 • Do not try and seal it whilst liquid as there is a high chance of spilling it (molten Bounder gets everywhere, instantly) and, even if successful, the vacuum created as it cools will make getting back into the tin with anything less than a pneumatic drill practically impossible.
